Millionaires in the USA are increasing, but the status loses its appeal
- The number of millionaires in the USA has risen to 23.8 million
- Many millionaires lead a discreet lifestyle
- The status of millionaire is losing its appeal
In the USA, the number of people who have a net worth of at least one million dollars is increasing. According to data from the Swiss bank UBS, approximately 10% of adult Americans are now millionaires, and every day about 1,000 new people reach this status. This is linked to the rising value of real estate, inflation, and access to the capital market for the middle class.
Thirty years ago, there were only 1.6 million millionaires in the USA, and now their number has increased to 23.8 million. However, despite the increase in the number of millionaires, the gap between the rich and the poor continues to widen. The wealthiest 10% of Americans own two-thirds of household wealth, while the bottom half holds only 3%.
People who achieve millionaire status often do not perceive it as something special. For example, Heidi Barli, a journalist who became a millionaire at 41, believes that it is not as glamorous as it seems. Many of the new millionaires live discreetly and continue to stick to a budget.
Among current millionaires, there is a trend towards a more sustainable financial planning. Most of them invest in stocks and real estate, and maintain an economical lifestyle. They also strive to teach their children financial responsibility.
While the status of millionaire has become more achievable, it is no longer seen as a symbol of great wealth. As noted by finance professor Kenneth Kero, "the dream of being a millionaire" has become more realistic for many. Nowadays, it is more about financial security than about lavish living.
