Investigation of Betting in Sports Continues to Envelop Players

Scandals related to sports betting remain relevant for professional leagues, especially following the decision of the U.S. Supreme Court in May 2018, which allowed betting on sports in many states. This has led to an increase in incidents related to gambling among athletes and officials.

Currently, it is known that two players from the Cleveland Guardians have been suspended from playing due to the investigation related to betting. The first player suspended was Luis Ortiz, who was suspended on July 3, and later, on July 28, Emmanuel Clase, a well-known closing pitcher, also received a suspension. Both suspensions are related to the investigation by Major League Baseball (MLB) regarding gambling activities.

Ortiz was suspended on the day he was supposed to play against the Chicago Cubs, while Clase, a three-time All-Star, received a suspension on a paid basis until September 31. In the statement from the team, it was noted that no other players or club personnel are subject to the influence of the investigation.

These incidents are taking place against the backdrop of other scandals related to gambling in the world of sports. For example, in 2024, Tyler Markano of the San Diego Padres was suspended indefinitely for betting on baseball. Earlier in 2024, Pat Hobergh, one of the young arbiters, was dismissed for sharing information about his gambling accounts.

These scandals raise questions about the integrity of sports competitions and will lead to increased control over gambling activities in professional sports.
