- The Tea app suspended its notification system due to a security breach.
- Thousands of selfies and photos belonging to users were compromised.
- Currently, it is unknown how many notifications remain visible.
The Tea app, designed for facilitating conversations, announced the suspension of the notification system following the discovery of another security breach. Earlier, on July 29, 2025, the company confirmed that some notifications had been accessible to unauthorized individuals due to a cyberattack.
The app allows women to safely discuss with individuals they meet, recently topping the charts in the US App Store. However, on Friday, it was revealed that thousands of selfies and photos belonging to users were discovered in the results of the security breach.
404 Media reported a new problem, referring to an independent security researcher who identified the potential for hackers to access notifications between users who discussed topics such as dating and relationships. In a statement on social media, Tea noted that "recently, there were disclosures about access to some specific notifications (DM) in the context of the initial incident."
The company reported that due to marketing security, the notification system has been suspended. "At this moment, we have not found evidence of access to other parts of our system," the statement reads.
Currently, it is unknown how many notifications remain visible. It has been indicated that nearly 72,000 images, including 13,000 selfies and photos, were uploaded to the internet during the initial incident. An additional 59,000 images, which were publicly accessible in the app, were also obtained without consent. At the same time, according to the company's words, email addresses or phone numbers were not accessible, and the breach only pertains to users who registered until February 2024.
