Consumer confidence in the USA increased in July

  • The consumer confidence index in July rose to 97.2
  • Consumers are still burdened by tariffs
  • Trade agreements with several countries boosted confidence

Washington (AP) — In July, consumer confidence among Americans increased, yet concerns about tariffs remain. The consumer confidence index, according to the Conference Board, rose by two points to 97.2, compared to 95.2 in June.

This increase in confidence aligns with analysts' forecasts. In April, the index fell to its lowest level since April 2020 due to concerns over the impact of President Donald Trump's tariffs. The indicator of short-term expectations of consumers regarding income, business conditions, and labor market conditions rose by 4.5 points to 74.4, but remains below 80, which could signal a possible recession. The assessment of the current economic situation by consumers decreased by 1.5 points to 131.5.

The Trump administration has canceled trade agreements with several countries, which has contributed to the increase in confidence in the economy. The negative trend, which was observed previously when large tariffs were announced, has gradually stabilized. However, consumer confidence still remains lower than the indicators of the previous year.
