Decline in Job Vacancies in the U.S. Labor Market in June

  • The number of job vacancies in the U.S. decreased to 7.4 million in June.
  • The labor market shows signs of cooling due to economic factors.
  • It is projected that the unemployment rate will rise from 4.1% in June to 4.2% in July.
  • The economy is creating fewer new jobs in 2025.

Washington — In June 2025, employers announced 7.4 million job vacancies, which indicates a cooling of the labor market in the U.S. According to the Department of Labor, compared to April, when there were 7.7 million vacancies, the number has decreased.

Although the number of layoffs remained stable, the number of people who are keeping their jobs has decreased. This may indicate a reduction in the likelihood of finding new employment.

The U.S. labor market is experiencing a downturn this year. The reasons for this are the lingering effects of increased interest rates by the Federal Reserve in 2022 and 2023, as well as trade wars, which create uncertainty for managers when making hiring decisions.

Next week, the Department of Labor will publish data on unemployment and hiring in July. It is expected that the unemployment rate will rise from 4.1% in June to 4.2% in July, while the number of new job openings will decrease to 115,000 in July from 147,000 in June.

Although the June data on hiring appeared positive, they were weaker than expected. The private sector added only 74,000 new jobs, which is the lowest figure since July of last year. Government and local authorities created nearly 64,000 new jobs in the education sector, which economists consider to be preserved due to seasonal fluctuations in the academic year.

This year, the economy is creating 130,000 jobs per month, which is a decrease compared to the 168,000 in the previous year and the average figure of 400,000 per month during the period from 2021 to 2023 during the recovery after the lockdowns due to COVID-19.
