- Proposals from organizations regarding the delivery of contraceptives have been rejected.
The Trump administration has decided to eliminate contraceptives worth a total of 9.7 million dollars, instead of delivering them to women in other countries. These preparations, which were purchased for use in countries with low income levels, are currently being stored in Belgium.
Contraceptives, which include intrauterine devices (IUDs), implants, and tablets, are subject to elimination through a decision made by the U.S. State Department. Their elimination is valued at 167 thousand dollars.
The Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is trying to prevent the destruction of these supplies, leading to negotiations with the U.S. embassy. Additionally, organizations such as MSI Reproductive Choices proposed to cover the costs of delivery and distribution of contraceptives, but their proposals were rejected.
The contraceptive supplies in question may expire by 2028 or 2029. According to experts' assessments, the destruction of such preparations could lead to serious consequences for women in countries where access to contraception is limited.
Some U.S. lawmakers, including Senator Jim Shahiin, are trying to pass a law that would prohibit the destruction of such products without prior attempts to sell or donate them.
This situation raises serious questions related to access to reproductive rights and resources, especially in countries that face crises.
