The Court in Great Britain Confirms Sanctions Against Shvidler

  • The Supreme Court of Great Britain dismissed the appeal of Shvidler.
  • The sanctions were imposed due to ties with Roman Abramovich.
  • The court also dismissed the appeal regarding the detained superyachts.

On July 29, 2025, the Supreme Court of Great Britain dismissed the appeal of the Russian businessman Yevgeny Shvidler against sanctions imposed on him as a result of the full-scale invasion of Russia into Ukraine.

The sanctions were introduced in February 2022 due to Shvidler's ties with former owner of the Chelsea football club Roman Abramovich, as well as through his previous position as director of the Russian steel manufacturer "Evraz." In his appeal, Shvidler stated that the sanctions caused serious damage to his business and impacted the lives of his family.

The judges, who voted 4 to 1, stated that there is a "rational connection" between the sanctions and their purpose — to prevent Shvidler from aiding the Russian invasion of Ukraine and to make it difficult for Abramovich. According to the judges' words, the sanctions against Shvidler "send a clear signal" to people in his position, that they should distance themselves from Russian business.

In addition, the court also dismissed the appeal of the Russian businessman Sergey Naumenko, whose superyacht valued at 44 million euros was detained in London.
