A group of prominent Israeli figures, including academics, activists, and intellectuals, called for an international coalition to impose "principled sanctions" on Israel due to the situation of famine in Gaza. In a letter published in The Guardian, 31 signatories, including Oscar-winning actor Yuva Abraham, accused Israel of "starving the people of Gaza to death." The letter calls for urgent sanctions to be imposed, as long as violence is not stopped and permanent ceasefire is not achieved.
The situation in Gaza is exacerbated by the increasing number of victims. According to the Ministry of Health of Gaza, over 60,000 Palestinians have died in 21 months of war. Additionally, Israeli human rights organizations, such as B'Tselem and Physicians for Human Rights, have stated that Israel is conducting a "genocidal" policy against Palestinians in Gaza.
On Monday, July 29, 2025, Labour leader Keir Starmer held an emergency cabinet meeting to discuss the situation in Gaza. This event took place against the backdrop of growing public pressure on the UK government to impose sanctions against Israel. Starmer noted that it is necessary to take serious measures to influence Israeli policy regarding Gaza.
At the same time, former US President Donald Trump also spoke on this issue, stating that he is ready to "do everything possible to resolve the situation in Gaza." Trump emphasized that the situation with famine in Gaza is a reality, and he called on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid.
Regardless of the statements from Israeli officials about the absence of famine, numerous international organizations have confirmed the existence of a critical humanitarian situation in the region. According to UN data, Gaza is experiencing "the worst famine scenario," and the situation requires urgent intervention.
