The Goodwood Cup marked a significant victory for Scandinavia over fellow competitor Illinoys, but the tragic death of Trushan cast a shadow over the event.
Trushan, who was trained by Alan King, was halted on the home stretch due to an injury that turned out to be fatal. James Given, director of the British Horseracing Authority, confirmed that during the race Trushan broke his left hind leg, which led to the conclusion that veterinarians were unable to save him.
Trushan had 16 wins from 34 starts and was known for his achievements in racing, including the Cup at Ascot three times and the Goodwood Cup in 2021, when he became the first horse to win that race.
Scandinavia, ridden by Wayne Lordan, won the Goodwood Cup, competing against Illinoys to the very finish. Trainer Aidan O'Brien noted that Scandinavia proved to be a strong competitor, capable of further victories.
O'Brien also mentioned plans for Scandinavia's participation in the St Leger at Doncaster, expressing confidence in the horse's abilities.
The tragedy involving Trushan left a mark on the opening of the festival, with many participants expressing their heartfelt condolences.
