Green light for military service for Ukrainians over 60

  • Civilians over 60 years old can join the army.
  • Contracts for service are signed for one year.
  • The attack on the enlistment center resulted in casualties among those in the enlistment center.

On July 29, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky signed a law that allows civilians aged 60 and over to voluntarily join the ranks of the armed forces.

This law stipulates that during the time of martial law, civilians over 60 years old can be accepted into military service under a contract with the written consent of the commander of the unit they are assigned to, which is recognized by the military-medical commission.

Military personnel of this age category can occupy positions in non-combat units, including ranks of sergeants and officers. Contracts for individuals over 60 years old are signed for one year with the possibility of extension, while candidates for officer positions must obtain approval from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

All such contracts will be automatically annulled if the martial law is lifted. According to information, on July 16, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted a law that allows civilians over 60 years old to sign contracts with the armed forces.

Currently, as a result of the Russian attack, at least 16 were killed in the enlistment center near Zaporizhzhia, including 35 wounded. The attack was condemned by the head of the president's office, who called it a war crime.
