- Trafford will return to the club after a successful loan period at Burnley.
On July 29, 2025, the club Manchester City officially announced the signing of goalkeeper James Trafford from Burnley. The 22-year-old player signed a five-year contract with the possibility of extending for another year.
Trafford returns to Manchester after Burnley activated the rights to the matches that were established in the agreement when City sold him for 14 million pounds two years ago. Now Manchester City will pay for the goalkeeper 27 million pounds, making this deal one of the largest in British history for goalkeepers.
Trafford, who was part of the Burnley team that returned to the Premier League, played 73 matches for the club from Lancashire, of which 29 were without conceding goals. He was also included in the previous squad of the England national team for Euro 2024, although he did not receive any senior caps at the professional level.
The goalkeeper expressed excitement about returning to City, stating that it felt like home. Trafford noted that during this time he has become more experienced and ready for new challenges in the Premier League.
At Manchester City, Trafford will compete for a place in the starting lineup with Ederson, as well as with new signing goalkeeper Steven Ortega. City will start their season in the Premier League against Wolverhampton on August 16.
