German alpinist suffered injuries during ascent on the mountain

PESHWAR, Pakistan — German alpinist and Olympic champion Laura Dalmeijer reported serious injuries during an attempt to summit peak Laila in Karakoram. The incident occurred on Monday, July 28, when she and her partner on the ascent, Marina Eva, were struck by falling rocks at an altitude of about 5,700 meters.
At the time of the accident, Dalmeijer was at an elevation of approximately 18,700 feet. Marina managed to descend to base camp with the help of rescuers who were present at the site of the incident. According to Faizullah Farak, a representative of the Gilgit-Baltistan government, rescue operations were suspended after sunset on Wednesday, but a new attempt will begin in the morning with military helicopters involved.
In Germany, Dalmeijer's management confirmed the seriousness of her injuries, stating that the helicopters managed to reach the site of the incident only on July 29. Kerrr Haydry, vice-president of the Pakistan Alpine Club, noted that rescue operations are ongoing, and military helicopters are participating in these efforts.
About a hundred alpinists are trying to summit the mountains in northern Pakistan, where there are often tragic accidents due to avalanches and sudden changes in weather. In addition, northern Pakistan has been affected by recent avalanches and landslides, resulting in more than 20 Pakistani tourists going missing without a trace last week near the Chilas area.
