Microsoft Authenticator Changes Password Management to a New Method
- Microsoft Authenticator will disable password management features on September 1.
- Transition to the new authentication system - passkeys.
- You can retrieve old passwords via the Edge browser.
As a user of Microsoft Authenticator, you have likely received a notification that password management features in the app will no longer be available. Your saved passwords will be deleted on September 1.
This is related to Microsoft's transition to a new method of digital authentication, known as passkeys, which is considered a more secure way to log into systems. The company noted that in 2024, there were expected to be 7,000 attacks on passwords per second, which is more than double the rates of 2023.
The Authenticator app previously provided the ability for multifactor authentication, single-use passwords, and biometric login. However, the app will continue to support authentication for services, including those with passkeys, while password management features will be transitioned to the Edge browser.
However, not all websites still support passkeys, and many of them still require passwords.
How to Create a Passkey in Authenticator
Passkeys simplify access to online accounts, as you do not need to remember or enter complex passwords. You can use biometric data, such as fingerprints or facial recognition, to access your accounts.
A passkey consists of two parts of a code, which only make sense in conjunction. One part is stored in the cloud or on a physical device, while the other is on services or online accounts that you want to access.
Users who did not receive an invitation to set up a passkey can do so by opening the Authenticator app, selecting their account, and tapping on the option "set up a passkey."
Retrieving Old Passwords in Edge
Your old passwords will be synchronized with your Microsoft account. To access them after September 1, you need to install the Edge browser and log into it.
For iOS users, you need to go to Settings > General > AutoFill and enable Edge.
Android users need to go to Settings > General Management > Passwords and AutoFill > AutoFill Service and select Edge.
Laptop and desktop users should open Edge and go to Settings > Profiles > Passwords to find the auto-fill settings.
Exporting Passwords for Other Managers
To export passwords from Authenticator, open the app, go to Settings > Export Passwords. This will create a file that contains your data, which can be imported into other password managers.
Most password managers will have the option to import, which typically prompts you to select this file. If you encounter difficulties, you should contact support services.
