Floods in Nigeria have claimed the lives of 25 people and left thousands without shelter

  • In the state of Adamawa, as a result of the floods, at least 25 people have died.
  • The disaster has displaced over 5,000 people.
  • Floods in Nigeria have become a recurring event due to climate change.

In the state of Adamawa, Nigeria, as a result of heavy rains, floods have claimed the lives of at least 25 people, and 11 individuals are considered missing, reported the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in a statement. The floods, which began last week in five communities in the Yola region, have led to the displacement of 5,560 people.

For those affected by the disaster, a relief camp has been organized at the Aliyu Musdafa College in Yola, where basic necessities are being provided, according to NEMA. "The presence of both governmental and non-governmental partners was significant, contributing to effective humanitarian management of the situation," the statement reads.

Hundreds of people have suffered injuries, as several areas in the capital city, Yola, were flooded last week. NEMA has warned of possible further flooding and has urged residents of the affected areas to evacuate to higher ground.

Flooding is a common occurrence in Nigeria during the rainy season, which lasts from June to November. This year, as a result of flooding, more than 200 people have already died in other parts of Nigeria. Scientists confirm that climate change is contributing to the emergence of such extreme weather events.
