UCLA agrees to pay $6.5 million in an anti-Semitism case

  • UCLA has agreed to pay $6.5 million in an anti-Semitism case.
  • The agreement includes funding for organizations fighting anti-Semitism.
  • Protests in support of Palestine have been labeled as anti-Semitic on campus.

The University of California, Los Angeles announced the achievement of an agreement regarding discrimination, which was filed by a group of Jewish students and alumni. The agreement provides for a payment of over $6.5 million to resolve allegations of anti-Semitism during protests in support of Palestine that occurred last year.

Plaintiffs stated that the university did not take measures to ensure access for Jewish students to certain parts of the campus where the protests took place. As a result of the agreement, the university acknowledged that it "did not meet" expectations, and is obligated to pay $2.33 million to eight organizations that support the Jewish community at UCLA, as well as $320,000 for initiatives to combat anti-Semitism.

In addition, each plaintiff receives $50,000. The university also pledges not to allow the exclusion of Jewish students from any programs or events.

Along with the statement from the university leadership, they noted that anti-Semitism and other forms of racism do not reflect the values of the educational institution. They emphasized that they have already implemented measures to combat anti-Semitism, such as publications on policies regarding discrimination.

This agreement was the result of a court process initiated in June 2024, following a series of protests that occurred across the country due to the war in Gaza. At UCLA, protesters called for the diversification of investments from companies linked to Israel, which was labeled as racist by counter-protesters.

The university also acknowledged criticism from activists who assert that the system of discrimination affects not only Jewish students but also those who advocate for the support of Palestine. Concurrently with these developments, other universities have also faced allegations of anti-Semitism and violations of freedom of speech rights.
