Democratic states file suit against the Trump administration
- 22 states have filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration
- Cutting funding threatens access to medical services
- The lawsuit concerns Planned Parenthood's right to free speech
More than 20 states, primarily led by Democrats, have filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration in a bid to stop the cuts to Medicaid funding for Planned Parenthood, the largest provider of abortion services in the U.S.
The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for Massachusetts and is a response to a recently signed tax package that includes provisions that prohibit Medicaid from covering medical services such as cancer screenings, birth control, and treatment for infections that are transmitted sexually.
The cuts affect groups that received over $800,000 from Medicaid in 2023. States such as California, New York, and Washington assert that the law is vague and that this action against Planned Parenthood violates their provisions on free speech.
They are asking the court to block this provision of the law and declare it unconstitutional. California Attorney General Rob Bonta stated that the cuts threaten access to medical assistance for many vulnerable Americans.
The Trump administration is defending this provision, asserting that states should not be compelled to fund organizations that engage in political activity instead of providing medical assistance.
Previously, Planned Parenthood filed a separate lawsuit, asserting that the law does not mention them, and the new provision aims to funnel funds to their centers across the country.
Some states that filed the lawsuit believe that the cuts could lead to increased spending on medical care in the long term.
A federal judge in Boston previously expanded the ban on the enforcement of this provision, which provided additional support for the lawsuits against the Trump administration.
