Veteran Marine Corps member Paula Kluatr was released from the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after being detained by Senator John Kennedy, a Republican from Louisiana. Paula, a Mexican immigrant, was one of thousands of individuals detained by ICE under the strict immigration policy of the Trump administration.
Along with electronic letters, as reported by the Associated Press, Kennedy's office sent a request to the Department of Homeland Security regarding Paula's release after a judge halted her deportation order. Already on Monday, she returned home to Baton Rouge to her husband Adrian Kluatr and their two small children.
Representative Kennedy, Kristi Teit, welcomed Adrian back with the return of his wife and thanked him for his military service. She noted that Kennedy's office played an important role in the interaction with the Department of Homeland Security.
Paula Kluatr was detained on May 27 during a meeting related to her application for obtaining a green card. She arrived in the USA with her mother over ten years ago, seeking asylum, but due to her mother's absence at the court hearing, which led to the issuance of a deportation order.
Starting her return, Paula stated that she again met her mother when she returned to her home and her little son.
Although the process of obtaining a green card can take several years, her attorney noted that the prospects look promising.
