TORONTO — Third-seeded Lorenzo Musetti and fifth-seeded Holger Rune won their first matches in the main draw of the National Bank Open tournament.

Musetti defeated Australian qualifier James Duckworth with a score of 7-5, 6-1, while Rune overcame Dutchman Mpetshi Pervikardo with a score of 7-6 (7), 6-3 on a spectacular, sunny day.

All seeded players had a first-round bye in this Masters 1000 tournament. The best players, such as Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, Jack Draper, and Novak Djokovic, are skipping this tournament on hard courts.

Among the other winners were eighth-seeded Casper Ruud, eleventh-seeded Karen Khachanov, fourteenth-seeded Francisco Serundolo, and sixteenth-seeded Alexei Popirin, who is a reigning champion.
