Taiwan President Canceled Trip to Latin America
- President Lai Ching-te canceled his trip to Latin America due to domestic problems.
- The U.S. did not allow a stop in New York due to a ban from China.
- Experts are concerned about changes in U.S.-China relations.
Taiwan President Lai Ching-te canceled his planned trip to Latin America, which sparked various opinions regarding the reasons for this decision. According to the information, his government reported that the cancellation was related to domestic problems, such as a natural disaster and negotiations over tariffs with the U.S.
Initially, it was planned that Lai would make a stop in New York, but, according to information from media sources, the Trump administration did not allow this stop due to a ban from China. It is noted that the U.S. traditionally supports Taiwanese leaders, but in this case, the situation escalated due to attempts by the Trump administration to achieve a trade agreement with China.
In Taiwan, a representative of the presidential office confirmed that Lai has no plans for a stopover abroad, taking into account the consequences of a typhoon that recently struck the region. Meanwhile, experts expressed concern that this decision could set a precedent in U.S.-China relations.
Democrats in the U.S. Congress accused Trump of succumbing to China, pointing out that previous presidents from both parties had previously allowed Taiwanese officials to transit through the U.S.
