Australia includes YouTube in the ban on social networks for children

  • YouTube is now subject to a ban for children in Australia.
  • Children will be able to watch videos, but will not be able to create accounts.
  • The ban will take effect in mid-2025.

In Australia, it was announced that YouTube will be included in the world's first ban on social networks for children. This ban, which will come into effect in mid-2025, will restrict children up to 16 years old from having accounts on social networks such as TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, X, and Snapchat.

Previously, YouTube had exceptions to this ban, but the government decided to change this decision. While users will be able to watch videos on YouTube, they will not be able to create their own accounts, which is necessary for downloading content or interacting with other users.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that social networks are causing harm to children, and the government is trying to protect them. He emphasized that this is not the only way to solve the problem, but it is significant.

Internet safety expert Julie Inman Grant reported that YouTube often becomes a platform where children aged 10 to 15 are exposed to harmful content. Minister for Communications Anna Velis also noted that there is a place for social networks, but not for algorithms that endanger children.

Along with the new rules, technology companies can be fined up to 50 million Australian dollars if they do not comply with age restrictions.
