On Wednesday, July 30, 2025, one of the strongest earthquakes of the last decade struck the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia. According to preliminary estimates, its magnitude reached 7.9, which led to the destruction of administrative infrastructure in the region and a total loss of life.
Witnesses reported that in the city of Severokurilsk, furniture was shaking, goods fell off the shelves, and car alarms were triggered. The governor of the Sakhalin region, Valery Limarenko, announced the evacuation of residents from unsafe zones.
At the same time, in other parts of the world, serious earthquakes have also been recorded. For example, in 1960, a magnitude 9.5 earthquake struck Chile, which resulted in the deaths of over 1,600 people. In 2004, a magnitude 9.1 earthquake in Indonesia resulted in the loss of 230,000 lives.
In Japan, in 2011, a magnitude 9.1 earthquake caused a disaster that destroyed parts of the Fukushima nuclear power plant, resulting in a significant number of casualties.
