Kampala, Uganda — The political situation in Uganda is deteriorating, according to opposition figure Bobi Wine ahead of the presidential elections, which will take place at the beginning of the upcoming year. He noted that he and other activists who oppose President Yoweri Museveni face serious threats.
Wine, whose real name is Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, stated that the threats he receives are very real. They intensified in recent months following attacks from the president's son, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba. In January, Kainerugaba wrote that "Uganda is being robbed" by a president who allows this. In April, he caused a wide outcry, stating that the three-time president is "in his bubble". This officer even appeared in court, not in the clothes he usually wears without support, which indicates torture.
Wine, often referred to as the "ghetto-president", has significant support among the working class in urban areas. In the 2021 elections, he received 35% of the votes, while Museveni received 58%, which became the highest result for a president throughout his career. Wine insists that his victory was stolen through mass fraud.
He plans to mobilize his supporters for a "protest vote" against the government, yet his attempts to organize meetings often encounter police force. Kainerugaba recently stated that state security will protect all candidates in the presidency, which has raised concerns about the same legal rights in the country, where since the moment of independence in 1962 there has been no peaceful change of power.
Regardless of the pressure, Wine noted that his determination has only increased.
