Trump allowed Ukrainian refugees to stay in the USA until the end of the war
- Trump confirmed that Ukrainian refugees can stay in the USA until the end of the war.
- More than 240,000 Ukrainians have received refugee status through the "Uniting for Ukraine" program.
- Discussions about the status extension remain among Ukrainian refugees.
This is reported by RBC Ukraine, Meduza.
US President Donald Trump announced that Ukrainian refugees will be able to stay in America until the war, which has been ongoing since 2022, is over. He made this statement during a press conference in Washington. Trump noted: "We will work with those who have come from Ukraine."
This statement is significant, as many Ukrainians have received refugee status through the "Uniting for Ukraine" program. Since the beginning of the war, over 240,000 Ukrainians have arrived in the USA, who have received support from American sponsors.
Regardless of this news, refugees remain concerned about potential changes in Trump's policies. Earlier, it was reported that the president's administration is considering the possibility of rescinding temporary legal status for many Ukrainians. This cycle of uncertainty was highlighted earlier this year when the US Department of Homeland Security unexpectedly sent an electronic letter outlining the potential rescinding of permits for some refugees.
At the beginning of January 2025, it was also announced about the suspension of the "Uniting for Ukraine" program, which had facilitated Ukrainians' entry into the USA. This cycle of uncertainty particularly affects those seeking asylum from the war.
