Hawaii is preparing for tsunami after earthquake in Russia
- The earthquake in Kamchatka triggered a previous warning about tsunamis for Hawaii.
- The governor urged residents to stay in coastal zones.
- The previous warning stated that residents remained on alert.
On July 29, 2025, a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 8.7 struck off the coast of Kamchatka, triggering a tsunami warning for Hawaii and other regions of the Pacific Ocean. Following this, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) began issuing alerts, which previously had been raised due to the increased likelihood of wave occurrence off the coast.
This warning prompted residents of Hawaii to remain in coastal areas and to relocate to higher ground. On the islands of Maui, Oahu, and Hawaii, waves were recorded at a height of several feet. Governor Josh Green urged people to stay calm and take measures to protect their lives and property.
At the time residents were evacuating, traffic jams occurred on the roads, and many people were trying to reach safer places. Residents of Maui, who had already experienced devastating forest fires two years ago, were again forced to seek shelter in hotels. Although the tsunami warning was issued 40 minutes prior, officials urged people to stay on alert.
Historically, Hawaii has been threatened by tsunamis from distant sources, so it was important to respond appropriately to this situation. The tsunami warning is issued for the safety of residents, even if the waves do not reach the coast.
