United States Returns Child from Camp in Syria
- The United States has returned a child from the al-Hol camp in Syria.
- About 30,000 people from 70 countries are residing in the al-Hol camp.
- Syrian democratic forces manage the camp under harsh living conditions.
The United States has returned an American child who was separated from their family to the camp in northeastern Syria. This camp, known as al-Hol, houses tens of thousands of people who have ties to the terrorist group Islamic State (IS). According to assessments from the State Department, nearly 30,000 people from 70 countries remain in the camp, the majority of whom are relatives and children of IS fighters.
The State Department noted that the child "knew nothing of life outside the confines of the camps" and will be reunited with their family. The al-Hol camp is plagued by poor living conditions and violence, which has repeatedly been reported by human rights organizations.
Forces supported by the U.S., known as the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), have been managing this camp for many years. They are key allies of Washington in the fight against IS in Syria. The State Department emphasized that the only sustainable solution to the humanitarian and security crisis in these camps is the repatriation of their nationals.
In April, the SDF and Damascus reached an agreement on the repatriation of Syrians from the camp, but the implementation of this agreement remains stalled. Washington is seeking to facilitate a coordinated control over the territory, which is currently under the management of the SDF.
