MELBOURNE, Australia — The police of Australia arrested a 21-year-old man, a suspect in the attack on the Adass Israel synagogue in Melbourne last December. This attack marked a significant escalation of anti-Semitic violence in the country.

The arrest took place in the middle of the week when the suspect was spotted in one of the buildings. During the attack, the synagogue was partially destroyed, and one of the worshippers received unspecified injuries. Currently, the investigation is being led by the Victoria Joint Counter Terrorism Team, which is examining the attack as politically motivated.

In the investigation, over 220 employees of human rights organizations participated, who spent more than 50,000 hours on the investigation. The arrested suspect is linked to organized crime, such as the synagogue, ensuring public safety and car theft. For these crimes, the suspect faces up to 15 years in prison for the synagogue and up to 10 years for the other two crimes. So far, the suspect has not been officially charged.

The police also suspect that the attack may involve organized criminal groups that have worked with local partners in Victoria. They are collaborating with international partners to ensure the investigation proceeds smoothly.

This incident has been classified as a terrorist act, which allows for more resources to be allocated for the investigation. Minister of Internal Affairs Tony Burke welcomed the arrest, calling it "a crime against humanity."

The Australian government has pledged to allocate 30 million Australian dollars for the restoration of the synagogue. The president of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry hopes for further arrests and swift prosecution of the perpetrators of the crime.
