TikTok Launches Fact-Checking System Footnotes in the USA

  • Footnotes allows users to fact-check information on TikTok in the USA.
  • Users can add and evaluate notes to videos.
  • The system complements the existing TikTok fact-checking program.

This was reported by TechCrunch, Engadget.

TikTok announced the launch of Footnotes, a new fact-checking system based on the principles of crowdsourcing. This feature, analogous to Community Notes on X, will initially be available to users in the USA.

All TikTok users in the USA can review notes that have been recognized by users and provide their evaluations. TikTok planned to introduce this feature back in April, when over 80,000 users became authors of notes.

Footnotes allows participants to add notes to videos that contain misleading statements or require additional context. Other participants can evaluate the note as useful, so it is represented generally. TikTok utilizes an algorithm to determine consensus among authors.

This initiative complements the existing Global Fact-Checking Program of TikTok, rather than replacing it. The company continues to collaborate with over 20 accredited organizations for fact-checking in 60 languages and 130 countries.

Footnotes will appear under the video description, and users will be able to review the notes and links in detail. TikTok emphasizes that notes comply with the same content moderation standards as all other content on the platform.
