In Baltimore, the Orioles team triumphed in two matches against Toronto, but for Seranthony Dominguez, this day became special due to his trade. The pitcher was traded from the Orioles to the Blue Jays between the games.
"After the first game, I was with the guys, and then they called me over and said: 'You’ve been traded. Go to the visiting dugout,'" Dominguez recounted. He did not pitch in the first game, which the Orioles won 16-4. Dominguez's trade to the young right-handed pitcher Jujuan Utes-Brown was announced shortly before the start of the second game.
In the second game, Dominguez took the mound and provided a scoreless inning for Toronto, but the Orioles still won 3-2.
Blue Jays manager John Schneider praised Dominguez's skills: "He is experienced, has very good data, can create problems in the bullpen, his fastball and splitter are at a high level."
This season, Dominguez has a record of 2-3 with an ERA of 3.16 in 44 appearances out of the bullpen. The Orioles, who occupy the last place in the standings, have also traded other pitchers, such as Brian Baker and Gregory Soto.
The Blue Jays, who are leading in the American League East, have an ERA of 3.94 in their bullpen. Dominguez, who was previously with Philadelphia last year, may strengthen their team.
23-year-old Utes-Brown, who was recognized as one of the top 10 prospects of the Blue Jays, has a record of 2-5 with an ERA of 3.54 in 19 starts in A and Double-A this year.
The affiliated teams of the Blue Jays and Orioles - New Hampshire and Chesapeake - also played one game against each other that same evening, which created a common connection for Utes-Brown.
The Blue Jays also announced the return of veteran right-hander pitcher Chad Green.
"I had the opportunity to spend time with Chad Green, who was very good not only for us but also in his career in the big leagues," Schneider said.
