Support for Zelensky's Bill on the Restoration of NABU and SAP

  • The committee of the Verkhovna Rada supported the bill on restoring the powers of NABU and SAP.
  • The "European Solidarity" faction proposed an alternative bill for restoring the independence of anti-corruption agencies.
  • Protests against limiting the independence of NABU and SAP have sparked mass actions in Ukraine.

This is reported by RBC Ukraine, Interfax Ukraine, Interfax Ukraine.

The committee of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on legal activities supported the presidential bill No. 13533, which restores the powers of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAP).

The decision was made unanimously at the meeting, in which all 19 committee members participated. As reported by MP Yaroslav Zheleznyak, the parliament considered this bill on July 31 in two readings.

This bill aims to subordinate SAP to the General Prosecutor and also limit its influence on NABU. Other provisions include ensuring institutional independence of SAP and simplifying the procedure for appointing prosecutors.

Earlier, the Verkhovna Rada adopted bill No. 12414, which limited the independence of NABU and SAP, which triggered mass protests in Ukraine. In response, President Volodymyr Zelensky submitted a new bill aimed at restoring the independence of these agencies.

The "European Solidarity" faction registered an alternative bill, which also aims to restore the independence of NABU and SAP. According to the words of the faction's leader Iryna Gerashchenko, the new bill does not provide for the restoration of a transparent competition for prosecutors, which may lead to increased dependence of prosecutors on political influences.

Gerashchenko emphasized the importance of returning to the jurisdiction of NABU the President's Office and the State Bureau of Investigation.

Members of the "European Solidarity" faction urged deputies to support real reforms of anti-corruption agencies, rather than cosmetic changes that do not address systemic issues.
