The legendary German biathlete Laura Dahlmeier died as a result of a tragic accident during a mountain expedition in Pakistan. The athlete was 31 years old, reports Der Spiegel.
Details of the tragedy
The sports team confirmed the death of the Olympic champion and seven-time world champion. Her life was cut short due to a rockfall at an altitude of approximately 5700 meters. The incident occurred on Monday, but official confirmation was only made public recently.
The rescue operation lasted all this time.
Preliminary data suggest that Dahlmeier died instantly from sustained injuries. Other details of the incident are not yet disclosed.
Who was Laura Dahlmeier
Laura Dahlmeier entered the history of biathlon as one of the most successful athletes from Germany. At the 2018 Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, she won two gold medals: in the sprint and the pursuit.
Her career also included seven gold medals at world championships and the overall title in the World Cup for the 2016/2017 season.
In 2019, at the age of 25, she officially ended her professional career, citing physical and emotional exhaustion. After retiring from sports, Dahlmeier actively engaged in mountain expeditions and ecological projects.
