Britain Recognizes the Palestinian State in September
- Britain recognizes the Palestinian state in September under conditions for Israel.
- The reaction from Israel to this decision is negative and critical.
- Britain hopes for support from other countries in recognizing Palestine.
London (AP) — Britain announced that it recognizes the Palestinian state in September, provided that Israel does not engage in the destruction of homes in Gaza, does not stop the construction of settlements in the West Bank, and does not commit to achieving a resolution based on two states.
This step follows France, which also plans to recognize Palestinian statehood at the General Assembly of the UN in September. More than 140 countries have already recognized Palestine, but Britain and France, as members of the Group of Seven and the UN Security Council, hope that their diplomatic move may create pressure on Israel to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Comments from Starmer
Prime Minister Keir Starmer noted that Britain recognizes the Palestinian state, provided that the Israeli government does not take substantial measures to improve the situation in Gaza, does not engage in the destruction of homes, and does not commit to a prolonged peace.
Starmer emphasized that Israel must allow the UN to resume the delivery of humanitarian aid and ensure that there will be no annexation in the West Bank.
Britain's Position
Britain traditionally supports an independent Palestinian state, but recognition may take place within the framework of a peace plan. Official representatives of Britain are increasingly convinced that achieving such a resolution is impossible due to the expansion of Israeli settlements on the territory that Palestinians desire for their state.
Many British lawmakers have urged the government to recognize the Palestinian state, especially following recent events from Gaza.
Reactions to the Announcement
Israel quickly condemned this decision. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that this "encourages the terrorism of Hamas" and "endangers its victims." Meanwhile, the Palestinian Authority welcomed Britain's announcement, considering it an important step towards recognizing the rights of the Palestinian people.
Limited Influence of Britain
Practically, Britain's influence on Israel is limited. The British government has suspended unconditional trade negotiations and halted some supplies of arms to Israel due to its actions in the conflict. Historically, Britain has a particular interest in the region, having been a former colonial power in Palestine.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer aims to balance Britain's influence with the US, working with the new E3 group — Britain, France, and Germany.
Currently, Britain and France hope that other countries will join their initiative. For instance, Malta has already announced that it will also recognize the Palestinian state in September.
