Leon Marchand sets a world record in the 200 meters

  • Leon Marchand has set a new record in the 200 meters in the individual medley.
  • The French swimmer surpassed the previous record held by Ryan Lochte.
  • In the final, he will also compete against British swimmer Duncan Scott.

Leon Marchand, the French swimmer, has set a new world record in the distance of 200 meters in the individual medley, completing the distance in 1 minute 52.61 seconds. This record was established during the semifinals of the World Championship in aquatic sports, which is taking place in Singapore.

At 23 years old, Marchand has surpassed the previous record, which belonged to Ryan Lochte and stood at 1:54.00 from 2011. "I really can't believe it right now," said Marchand, who earlier won four gold medals at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

"I knew I would be close to my personal record, but today I felt really good, and the preparation was spot on, so I was happy to compete. But 1:52 – that’s unbelievable for me," he added. In this semifinal, British swimmer Duncan Scott finished third with a time of 1:55.51 and also made it to the final.

In another part of the competition, British swimmer Freya Colbert took fourth place in the women’s final of the 200 meters freestyle, setting a British record with a time of 1:55.06. This heat was won by Australian Mollie O’Callaghan with a time of 1:53.48.
