Two brothers from Great Britain, aged 11 and 13, drowned on the beach of Llarg, in Salou, which is in northeastern Spain. The incident occurred in the evening hours when the boys got into the water and encountered difficulties while swimming.
Each father, who also entered the sea, tried to rescue the children but himself needed assistance and was rescued. Emergency services were called to the scene at around 20:45 local time, but they were unable to save the brothers.
This tragedy occurred several years after a 54-year-old German tourist drowned on the beach in Cambrils. Since the beginning of the summer season from June 15, there have been 16 fatal incidents on the beaches of Catalonia, which is five more than in the same period last year.
The Catalonia Civil Protection Agency reported that medical teams and psychologists were involved in the incident to support the families of the victims. A representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Great Britain confirmed that they provide support to the families of the deceased and maintain contact with local authorities.
