Google has confirmed that it will sign the Code of Practice of the European Union regarding general artificial intelligence, which is a voluntary document. This Code aims to help AI developers implement processes for compliance with the new AI Law, adopted in 2024.
The signing of the Code will take place ahead of the new obligations for companies engaged in the development of general-purpose models with systemic risks, which come into effect on September 2, 2025. Among the companies to which this applies are Anthropic, Meta, and OpenAI.
In a statement on July 30, 2025, Kent Walker, President of Global Affairs at Google, expressed concerns about the impact of the AI Law on technology development in Europe. He noted that the new version of the Code is better than the initial one, but still has shortcomings, suggesting that the law could hinder AI development in Europe.
Along with the Code of Practice, companies are required to adhere to a series of guidelines, including providing up-to-date documentation on their AI tools and services, and also not using proprietary content for AI training.
The EU AI Law identifies risks associated with the use of AI and prohibits certain unsafe applications, such as manipulation of behavior or social scoring. The document also outlines requirements for the registration of AI systems and adherence to standards for managing risks and quality.
