BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Buffalo Sabres will continue to play under the name KeyBank Center after both sides announced an extension of naming rights for 10 years in the middle.
The new agreement will begin next year and last until the 2035-36 season. The Cleveland-based bank has a significant presence in the Buffalo region and obtained the rights to the arena's name after acquiring First Niagara Bank in 2016. As part of the extension agreement, the bank's name will appear on players' helmets during away games, starting with this season.
The arena will undergo a series of necessary renovations since its opening in 1996. Last year, the team replaced the scoreboard above center ice. Upcoming phases of renovations, as expected, will include improvements to seating and amenities for fans.
The Sabres control this building, which is also home to the three-time champions of the National Lacrosse League, the Bandits, and have emphasized adding more events since Pat Guillemette became the team's executive director last year.
In the fall, the arena will host one of the concerts of Paul McCartney as part of his tour through Southern America, and it will also hold a women's hockey series match between the USA and Canada before the Olympic Games.
It is noted that the Sabres team is currently experiencing tough times on the ice, hovering in the middle of the record for the NHL's 14-season playoff drought.
