Referees may use cameras during matches
- Cameras for referees could become standard in the Premier League
- IFAB approved the expansion of camera usage at the international level
- The technology may enhance the viewing experience for spectators
The use of cameras for referees could become a new standard in the Premier League following successful trials at the Club World Cup. The International Football Association Board (IFAB) has approved the expansion of this experiment for other competitions.
Cameras were protested at the Club World Cup in the USA, where referees were able to gain insight into the game from their own perspective. According to Pierluigi Collina, chairman of the IFAB referees committee, the results exceeded all expectations. He noted that such technology could improve the television experience for viewers.
In the Premier League, cameras could be introduced as early as the 2025-26 season. Clubs will have to decide when and how to implement them. This would allow viewers to gain a new perspective on referee decisions during matches.
IFAB and FIFA will also provide recommendations and technical information for conducting similar trials in other competitions.
Cameras have already been used during the match between Crystal Palace and Manchester United in April 2024. At that time, it was a one-time event for a program that promoted the use of referees.
