According to Google data, the number of attacks on Gmail accounts increased by 84% in 2024, and this trend is expected to continue in 2025. Phishing and credential theft now account for the majority of all successful attacks on Google accounts.

Google proposes new security solutions, including a transition to a passkey system, which provides a more reliable defense against phishing attacks. Passkeys are unique to each website and cannot be stolen or reused like traditional passwords.

Additionally, Google is introducing Device Bound Session Credentials (DBSC), which ensure additional security by linking sessions to a specific device. This complicates the ability of attackers to exploit stolen sessions on other devices.

Google also announced new changes to the Project Zero, aimed at improving transparency in security issues. They provide information about vulnerabilities detected weekly after their discovery.
