YouTube Introduces Technology to Identify Age for Protecting Minors
- YouTube will implement automatic age identification for users
- Minors will receive restrictions on access to certain content
- Users will be able to verify their age in case of a reminder
Starting from September 13, 2025, YouTube will introduce a new technology for age identification that automatically identifies users under 18 years old. The system will take into account the account age and user activity to apply appropriate restrictions for minors.
Restrictions will include blocking videos with age restrictions, showing only non-personalized ads, reminders about breaks, and limitations on repeat recommendations on sensitive topics, as well as body image. Additionally, minors will receive automatic reminders about confidentiality when commenting or uploading videos.
YouTube will inform users that they will be classified as minors. In case of a reminder, users will be able to verify their age using a supporting document, selfie, or credit card.
This initiative is part of a broader Google campaign to enhance child safety online. Similar measures have already been implemented in the United Kingdom and are being considered in some U.S. states and in the EU.
YouTube warns that some content creators may earn less because ads will not be targeted at child accounts. The new system will initially be tested on a small group of users in the U.S. before it is rolled out in other countries.
