Skechers Releases Children's Sneakers with a Compartment for AirTag
- Skechers sneakers feature a hidden compartment for AirTag.
- Parents can track their children's whereabouts through the footwear.
- The product does not have branding that indicates it is for AirTag.
This is reported by TechCrunch, The Verge.
Skechers has introduced a new line of children's sneakers that contain a hidden compartment for installing an Apple AirTag. This allows parents to track their children's whereabouts through the footwear. Inside the sneakers, there is a small inserted element that opens access to the compartment. These sneakers do not come with an AirTag, and Skechers is not an official Apple partner, having developed this product independently.
The footwear was announced in mid-July but received little attention in the press. It is known that Apple markets AirTag exclusively for tracking items such as keys or wallets, but parents are using this technology to keep track of their children. There are also other products that allow for the use of AirTag, such as bracelets or insoles.
Although AirTag is not intended for tracking the rapid movement of living objects, such as children, the technology can still potentially be misused. Some malicious actors have already used AirTag for stalking individuals, leading to legal actions. Apple has introduced some safety features to prevent users from unknowingly being tracked by AirTags that they may not be aware of.
Since Skechers manufactures this footwear solely for children, it is likely that it could also be used for tracking teenagers. However, normalizing such tracking could have repercussions beyond parental oversight of children. It is possible that Skechers or other brands may create similar products for adults with memory issues that could accidentally misplace themselves.
