Protests Over Rising Fuel Prices in Angola Result in Casualties
- 22 people were killed during the protests in Angola
- More than 1,200 people were arrested
- The protests began due to the increase in fuel prices
On Monday, July 30, 2025, in Angola, nationwide protests erupted following the government's decision to raise fuel prices. According to the office of the President of Angola João Lourenço, as a result of the unrest, at least 22 people were killed, and over 1,200 people were arrested.
The protests began two weeks ago when the government announced the removal of subsidies on diesel fuel, which led to an increase in prices by over 30%. This, in turn, forced taxi drivers to raise their fares by up to 50%. As a result of the protests, which spread from the capital Luanda to at least six other provinces, 197 people were injured.
The President's office reported numerous incidents of violence in shops and looting of vehicles during the unrest, which they described as "a climate of widespread lawlessness." To restore order, the army was deployed.
The human rights organization Human Rights Watch had previously accused the police of using excessive force during the largely peaceful demonstrations, where tear gas and rubber bullets were employed.
