The USA imposes sanctions against the Brazilian Supreme Court Justice

  • The USA's sanctions target the Brazilian Supreme Court Justice
  • Bolsonaro is accused in an attempt to maintain power
  • Travel restrictions have been imposed for Brazilian justices

On July 30, 2025, the U.S. Department of the Treasury announced the imposition of sanctions against the Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandra de Moraes. This decision is related to his role in cases concerning freedom of expression and the judicial process against former President Jair Bolsonaro.

Bolsonaro is accused in a planned power retention following the defeat in the 2022 elections against former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Where Moraes oversees this judicial process.

In the statement by the U.S. Treasury Secretary, it was noted that Moraes bears responsibility for a campaign of censorship, unlawful arrests that violate human rights, and politically motivated persecution, including against Bolsonaro.

The sanctions foresee the freezing of any assets belonging to Moraes in the USA. The Brazilian Supreme Court and the presidential palace have so far not responded to requests for comments.

This announcement follows the introduction of travel restrictions for Brazilian justices, including Moraes, on July 18, 2025. It is also worth noting that U.S. President Donald Trump announced on July 9 about 50% tariffs on imports of goods from Brazil, linking it to the judicial process against Bolsonaro.
