Brooks gained popularity as a trainer, working with such big-name boxers as Evander Holyfield and Mike Tyson. His coaching career began in the mid-1990s, when he helped Holyfield achieve two victories over Tyson. Later, he worked with Tyson during his comeback in the 2000s, when the boxer reached six championship bouts.

Promoter Lou DiBella confirmed the news of Brooks's death, stating that he was not only an outstanding trainer but also a wonderful person. Brooks also worked with brothers Vladimir and Vitali Klitschko, helping them enhance their technique.

At the start of his career, Brooks was a boxer, winning the title of national champion among amateurs in 1975. After that, he became a professional boxer, but he is most remembered as a trainer.
