A major explosion took place at the Horizon Biofuels factory in Fremont, Nebraska. Two girls under the age of 12 and one adult were killed as a result of the tragedy. The explosion occurred while the children were waiting for the end of the work shift of a factory worker to take them home.
After the explosion, Fremont Mayor Joey Spellerberg reported that those people remained trapped inside the building. On the afternoon of July 30, official sources confirmed their deaths. According to Spellerberg, firefighters could not reach the site due to strong smoke and fire.
Fremont Fire Chief Todd Bernt stated that the first responders encountered "heavy smoke and a large amount of fire" upon arriving at the scene. They also believe that flammable materials could have been stored at the factory based on alcohol.
The fire continued to burn throughout the night, despite the rain. The mayor described the situation as critical, as the explosion destroyed the building, and rescuers could not enter to search for missing persons. Local residents noted that the explosion sent strong shockwaves that could be felt in the vicinity.
The government of Nebraska, including Governor Jim Pillen, is monitoring the situation, providing support to local services and families of the victims.
