Cricket: Surrey strengthens its position in the title race against Durham

Surrey's leaders secured their place at the top of the First Division, having taken the lead in the match against Durham at Chester-le-Street. Surrey, having responded with 182 for 5 after Durham scored 153 on the first day, amassed 322 runs, thanks to Dan Lawrence (88) and Jordan Clark (82).

Durham concluded the day at 222 for 5, trailing by 53 runs, with the top position held by Emili Gea, who fell just one run short of a century - 99. Colin Ackerman went for 43, while two dismissed by Saya Kakhara gave Surrey hope for a fourth consecutive season.

The second for Nottinghamshire strengthens its chances of leadership thanks to captain Hasib Hamid at Trent Bridge. Responding with 438 runs, Hamid achieved his third century of the season, finishing the day on 103 without loss, allowing him to surpass 1000 runs this year.

Essex scored 602 for 6 against Worcestershire on the field, friendly for batters. The stalwarts Charlie Ellison (133) and Michael Pepper (107 not out) contributed to 148 runs for Tom Westley.

Worcestershire also achieved success with the bat, finishing on 140 for 2, where captain Alex Davies scored 58, while Dan Mosley remained unbeaten on 54.

Jake Libby (70 not out) and Adam Houson (82 not out) demonstrated consistency with an unbeaten partnership for the third wicket at 126.

In the Second Division, James Anderson celebrated his 43rd birthday with two wickets in the second innings against Glamorgan, while the Valley side dominated against Lancashire at Emirates Old Trafford. Glamorgan dismissed the hosts for 137, while leg-spinner Mason Crane secured his best career figures - 6 for 19.

Anderson gave Lancashire hope, dismissing Zain ul-Hassan and claiming his own wicket to eliminate Assus Tribe. However, Kiran Carlsen (43 not out) and captain Sem Northcote (26 not out) stabilized the game, and Glamorgan has a lead of 219.

Leaders Leicestershire achieved 471 against Kent, thanks to a remarkable partnership in the last wicket with 108 runs between Tom Scriven (99) and Joshuan Hull (35 not out).

Scriven set a career record at 99, while Foxes received maximum points for the collection in Kent, where Matt Parkinson claimed 7 for 137, securing his best figures in the first class.

The hosts concluded at 203 for 3, where Ben Compton remained on 101 not out. New Zealand's grace Kane Williamson scored 153, leading Middlesex to 445 in Cheltenham, where Gloucestershire finished the day at 54 for 1.

Martin Anderson became the basis of Derbyshire with 105 in their innings against Northgempstonshire. After they fell to 154 for 5, George Bartlett (60 not out) and Jastin Broad (64 not out) pushed Northgempstonshire to 265 for 5, responding with 112.
