Substack faced criticism for a notification promoting Nazi content

  • Substack faced criticism for a notification that promoted a Nazi blog.
  • The company is facing backlash over its content moderation policy.
  • Users have started migrating to other platforms due to the offensive content.

This is reported by Ars Technica, Engadget.

The Substack company stated that it was under scrutiny after a notification sent at the beginning of the week promoted a Nazi blog. According to a company representative, this happened due to a glitch that triggered discomfort among some users. Substack acknowledged that the notifications were "incredibly inappropriate and troubling."

In its statement, the company explained that the system responsible for the notification was temporarily disabled, and measures are being taken to prevent similar incidents in the future. This incident has sparked renewed criticism regarding Substack's policy that allows the publication of extremist content.

Earlier, in 2023, Substack had already faced similar accusations when several new newsletters were found to contain Nazi symbolism. At that time, the company stated that it does not support Nazis, but refrained from censorship, asserting that this would only worsen the situation.

Analysts, such as Joshua Fisher-Birch, have urged Substack to increase transparency and change its content policies to prohibit the publication of hate speech materials. They believe that platforms that allow the dissemination of hateful content should reconsider their rules to prevent similar incidents in the future.

In light of this situation, some users have begun to distance themselves from Substack, migrating to other platforms like Ghost, which offer lower fees and greater freedom in content publication.

Following this incident, calls for a boycott of Substack emerged as users do not wish to support a platform that does not ban hateful content.
