Typhoon and earthquake in Russia triggered tsunamis in the Pacific Ocean
- An earthquake of magnitude 8.8 struck on July 30, 2025.
- Tsunamis reached several countries, including Russia and the USA.
- Previous systems regarding tsunamis proved their effectiveness.
On July 30, 2025, an earthquake of magnitude 8.8 struck in eastern Russia. This triggered tsunamis that affected several countries, including Japan, Canada, and the USA. The authorities issued warnings about the tsunamis, but most of them were downgraded or reduced to recommendations by the afternoon of the same day.
The earthquake occurred in the underwater zone at a depth of about 12 miles, which is typical for such events. Although the waves that reached Hawaii and the western US coast were smaller than expected, they did not cause serious casualties. The governor of Hawaii reported that no significant waves were recorded.
Experts explain that not all earthquakes produce tsunamis, as this depends on the vertical movement of the ocean floor. In this case, despite the large magnitude, the nature of the rupture did not create the necessary deformation for generating large waves.
Previous systems regarding tsunamis were found to be effective, as they allowed for timely evacuations. Tourists and local residents in Hawaii spent the night in their cars after the evacuation to higher ground.
