Spotify Introduces Age Verification for Users in the United Kingdom
- Spotify is launching age verification for access to content.
- Users will need to either scan their face or provide an ID.
- Failure to verify age will lead to deactivation of the account.
Spotify is introducing new requirements for age verification for users in the United Kingdom, who are trying to gain access to content with age restrictions. This is related to new legislation in the United Kingdom that requires different online services to verify users' ages.
The company is collaborating with Yoti, a digital identification firm that developed the age verification system. Users may be asked to complete a facial scan through their mobile device to confirm their age. If the scan fails, the user can provide a document that confirms their age through the account settings.
Spotify warns that if a user cannot verify their age, access to the account may be blocked. The minimum age for Spotify users in the United Kingdom is set at 13 years. The company states: "If you cannot verify that you are old enough to use Spotify, your account will be deactivated and eventually deleted."
These changes also apply to other platforms that provide content for adults, such as Reddit and Twitter, which are required to implement similar age verification checks.
