Democratic lawmakers filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration

  • Democrats filed a lawsuit over restricted access to ICE.
  • Lawmakers report on poor conditions in detention centers.
  • Detention centers have become increasingly common occurrences.

Twenty Democratic members of Congress filed a federal lawsuit against the Trump administration, accusing it of violating their access to immigration detention centers. The lawsuit was filed on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, in the federal court for the District of Columbia.

In their complaint, the lawmakers state that the new policy of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) requires seven days' notice for access to detention centers, which supersedes federal law that allows members of Congress to conduct unannounced inspections.

They assert that without access to these facilities, the situation within them may remain unknown, especially as the administration detains more and more people. Recently, some lawmakers have already encountered refusals at detention centers in their own districts.

Along with the lawsuit, conditions in the detention centers include overcrowded cells, poor food, medical neglect, and even illegal detention of U.S. citizens. It is stated that without proper oversight, the situation may worsen.

Lawmakers emphasize that their rights as members of Congress to conduct inspections and obtain information about detention conditions are being violated. The lawsuit also mentions recent incidents where members of Congress were denied access to various immigration detention centers, including in California, Texas, and Colorado.

It begins to appear that the situation regarding access to detention centers is increasing. For example, last month, Democratic Representative Lamonica McIver from New Jersey was denied access during a visit to a detention center.

Lawyers believe that such actions by the Trump administration are illegal and aim to conceal the actual state of affairs in the centers.
