The official start of the NFL season 2025 will take place on Thursday, September 1, in Canton, Ohio, with the game in the Hall of Fame between the Detroit Lions and the Los Angeles Chargers. This game will also serve as a precursor to the ceremony introducing new members to the Hall of Fame.

This year, four new members will be inducted into the Hall of Fame: safety Eric Allen, safety Jared Allen, tight end Antonio Gates, and receiver Sterling Sharpe. The presentation of the gold jackets will take place on Saturday at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium.

The Lions, who achieved the best result in franchise history last season with 15 wins, did not manage to continue their success in the playoffs, losing to Washington. This year, the team announced changes in the coaching staff: the attacking and defensive coordinators were replaced by Jon Morton and Kelvin Sheppard, respectively.

The Lions will not feature key players like Jared Goff and rookies Tylik Williams and Tate Ratledge, while on the quarterback position, Hendo Hucker and Kyle Allen will step in.

The Chargers are also coming off a disappointing season, but under the leadership of Jim Harbaugh, the team showed improvements. Quarterback Justin Herbert will not participate in the game, but the starter will be Trey Lance, who is trying to secure a spot on the team after transitions from San Francisco and Dallas. His backup is rookie DJ Uigalalelei.

This game not only marks the start of the season but also the debut of new coordinators in the Lions, adding intrigue to the encounter.
