A State of Emergency Declared in Puerto Rico Due to Water Outage

  • The governor declared a state of emergency due to the water outage.
  • The National Guard has been mobilized to assist in the distribution of water.
  • A special coordinator has been appointed to stabilize the water supply.

On Wednesday, July 30, the governor of Puerto Rico declared a state of emergency and activated the National Guard due to the water outage, which has affected thousands of households.

Since the outage last week, nearly 180,000 residents have been affected. As of Wednesday, around 3,000 people have been left without water, including nearly a dozen hotels, according to the governor Jenniffer Gonzalez.

This situation has caused outrage among residents of the island, whose population is about 3.2 million, especially since the state water supply service has declined to name the company responsible for the breakdown of the main water pipeline during road repairs.

Municipal officials have organized water distribution points and provided drinking water to households, while the National Guard is also expected to assist in this activity.

"Currently, there are 11 hotels without water and residents without services, usually, we have an extraordinary situation," said Gonzalez.

The governor also appointed a special coordinator, who will stabilize the water supply, investigate the operations of the water service, and clarify how this situation arose. He plans to release a report over the next 10 days.

Gonzalez noted that the executive director of the water service, under whom the issues arose, remains in his position.

Prior to this incident, many communities across Puerto Rico had already been experiencing problems with water supply.
